Disclaimer: I’m not ungrateful for my name. It’s nice. And I love the name that I’m called because it’s unique and about fourteen years ahead of the name trend that’s going on right now. But sometimes it just gets ridiculous. Hence the following rant:

Anyone remember that Gilmore Girls episode where Lorelai shows Rory that she gets seven copies of each catalogue each month because they all have her down under different (and often wrong) names?

Okay, so a long time ago, my parents had a name all nice and picked out for me–first and middle. And then my dad came home one day and informed my mother that he’d found a third name that he thought was SO GOOD that it totally threw out the first and middle combination altogether.

Realizing that there was no way this was going to work out, my parents finally settled on the compromise of having the first and middle name come first and the third name come in the middle. But they would CALL ME by my third name. So, out comes me, and my birth certificate has the first AND middle name down as my first name (think “Mary Ann”) and my third name down as my middle name.

And the source for this rant comes from the fact that colleges, because of this unfathomable name arrangement, find it necessary to send me TWO COPIES of everything in the mail.

So, the moral of this story: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD, take the name that you want to call your child and make it their first name!!! And there’s more than one upside to this (besides the happiness of said child). For instance, it SAVES TREES. *points to overflowing mail stack*

In conclusion: BE GREEN. NAME YOUR CHILDREN CAUTIOUSLY.

No I don’t remember that Gilmore Girls episode, due to the fact that I don’t watch the show. Anyways I didn’t know you had 4 names! I only have 3.

  2. Allison says:

That sucks. You should change your name to Mike Hunt.
I love “Mike Hunt.” Or “Mike Hawk.”

Or just delve into insanity further! Add /more/ names. And introduce yourself to people as such.

Ian…YOU MUST WATCH IT!!! I think you’d really appreciate Lorelai Gilmore. I’ll convert you to being a Gilmore Girl fan yet!!! 😀

Hee hee, Allison. I shall change my name to Squeegie Beckenheimer.

  4. Great comparison! Thanks for the contribution! I do hope that you will continue to amaze us with new articles.

Amazing and well-structured article! Thanks a bunch for being so open minded to us and sharing your honest viewpoints with us!

  6. The choice of the name is very important because the child lives with this name all his life and it should not be negative or not suitable for him.

  7. I like the article but it needs to be a little bit extended in order everyone could easily comprehend its plot.
